Book project | Stories of resistance from the Ruhr region

In times of a shift to the right and fascists in German parliaments, we would once again like to emphasise the importance of resistance against these movements. In Germany, the memory of resistance to National Socialism is usually associated with places like Berlin or Munich, but few people think of the Ruhr region. But resistance was also practised here, often with dramatic consequences.

With the book „Stories of Was bedeutet das?Resistance from the Ruhr Area“, we would like to honour the courageous people who resisted and show how diverse the resistance was on the part of workers in the Ruhr area. As part of a project by the North Rhine-Westphalian association „Children of the Resistance“ and in cooperation with the „Association of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime – League of Anti-Fascists“ (VVN-BdA) from North Rhine-Westphalia, seven collections of reports have been compiled so far, from which we would like to present 14 stories that deal with the life and family histories of people who resisted in very different ways and under difficult conditions. Researched and written by relatives, the stories take a look back at the motives and actions of their parents and grandparents and openly show the family consequences of resistance. The content of the stories ranges from sharing and criticising political content to the armed struggle against fascism. The authors also provide an, often very personal, insight into the family lives of workers in Duisburg, Essen, Herne and Oberhausen during the Nazi regime. Unbroken by imprisonment, torture and persecution, these lives show that resistance against the National Socialists was possible and that it was practised, even in the face of all possible consequences – even when it was supposedly already too late.
