With its database, the Fritz Bauer Library is a lively research, education and encounter project. It tells the stories of people who often give their lives for this world.

The long-term project combines science and civic engagement in the fight for human rights. We create publicity for people who are searching for justice and defending human rights their own and those of „others“.

The project arose from an examination of the life and work of the lawyer and human rights campaigner Fritz Bauer (1903-1968). The prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials, Robert M.W. Kempner, recognised Bauer as the greatest ambassador the Federal Republic of Germany had after the Second World War.

Fritz Bauer gave us the decisive lesson from the Nazi trials as our mission: „You should have said no.“ By taking up this legacy, the Fritz Bauer Library opposes all current forms of racism, anti-Semitism and nationalism, war and militarism worldwide.

In future, the Fritz Bauer Library will commemorate the history of courageous people worldwide. Their fight for human rights should not be buried under the memory of the crimes committed in the history of mankind.

The history of human rights is our most precious heritage, the most valuable thing that has been created by people over the centuries. We are committed to keeping it alive every day.

We would like to thank all our partners and supporters, especially here in Bochum the „Bochumer Bündnis gegen Rechts“, the Jugendring and „Demokratie leben“, the VHS, the City Library and the Centre for City History, for making this launch possible.
