Born Claus Rosenthal in Rastatt in 1924, Nicolas (Claus) Rosenthal graduated from the Oberrealschule in Kehl. At the age of 14, after the Nazis came to power, he first went into exile in France and fled to the unoccupied part of the country in 1942. In the same year, Rosenthal was deported to Poland, where he survived several labour and deportation camps until he was finally liberated by Red Army soldiers in 1945. He returned to Paris, married in Strasbourg in 1948 and started a family with his wife in 1950. In 1952, they both travelled to Argentina where they still live today.
