Bettina Mikhail has written a history of the African-American civil rights campaigner Rosa Parks in plain language

When the seamstress Rosa Parks (1913-2005) from Montgomery, Alabama, refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger in 1955, this was a courageous act in the apartheid society of America at the time, and even more so: an act of resistance against oppression and social marginalisation. Rosa Parks‘ actions triggered the Montgomery bus boycott and marked a milestone in the African-American civil rights movement, which she would go on to pioneer. Her story is still relevant today and is an example of non-violent resistance and the fight for civil rights, which are also human rights.

The author tells the life story of Rosa Parks (1913-2005) embedded in the social conditions and developments of her era and honours Parks‘ role as a role model that concerns us all.
