Project with a role model character

CAB Caritas Augsburg offers training for women’s representatives in workshops. In the module „These are the rights of women in institutions“, Christine Borucker, head of the AAC advice centre and the CAB’s specialist centre for plain language, reads the book „Rosa Parks. A woman with courage“ in plain language.

„I love this book,“ says Christine Borucker. „The story of Rosa Parks fits perfectly into our lessons. Rosa Parks fought for her rights and is a role model for women.“

Women with disabilities who live or work in institutions for the disabled experience violence particularly frequently. For this reason, the Federal Participation Act has stipulated since 2018 that every workshop for people with disabilities must have women’s representatives who are available to those affected as contact persons and support them in standing up for their rights themselves.

The women’s representatives need training for this task. Such training courses are currently taking place all over Germany. This is also the case at CAB Caritas Augsburg, which offers training in plain language in seven modules, each lasting three days. The participants come from a radius of 150 kilometres.

„I couldn’t have wished for a better setting for the book than a training course for women’s representatives,“ says the author, Bettina Mikhail from Verbund Leichte Sprache Braunschweig (www.verbund-leichte-sprache.de) .

The book about Rosa Parks tells the story in plain language of the American woman of colour (1913-2005) who refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger in 1955. In doing so, she triggered the Montgomery/Alabama bus boycott and became a heroine of the African-American civil rights movement. Rosa Parks‘ story is still relevant today: the fight for civil rights is also a fight for human rights.

„The book, which also offers an audio version, can be read alone or in reading groups, schools and inclusive education centres as well as other institutions that create opportunities for participation,“ says Bettina Mikhail.

„Be courageous. Fight for your rights. And fight for the rights of all people“ is the message of the book. According to the author of the richly illustrated book, the message has been heard in Augsburg.

The book is published by BUXUS EDITION (ISBN 978-3981761429) and has 80 pages. You can find a reading and listening sample as well as the audio book (streaming) on the BUXUS STIFTUNG gGmbH website . The password for the audio book can be found in the book.
