It is now 76 years since Raoul Wallenberg disappeared in the Soviet Union, but his important legacy shines brighter than ever. At the same time, new research is challenging some long-held assumptions in the investigation of Wallenberg’s still not fully explained fate. We intend to vigorously pursue many of the new (and old) questions that remain unanswered, both in Sweden and in Russia and other countries. And we intend to add another important question to this growing list:
In January 1945, Raoul Wallenberg apparently hoped that Soviet Marshal Rodion Malinovsky would help him contact Soviet officials in Moscow „or go there.“ The reason for Wallenberg’s request is not known. Should this request be confirmed, it could have increased the mistrust of the Soviet military and counterintelligence officers towards the young Swedish diplomat. It may also have influenced the Swedish government’s reaction to Wallenberg’s disappearance.

I will be back shortly with another update – including the concrete steps we are planning and a summary of several very moving and inspiring events taking place to honour Raoul Wallenberg’s life and achievements.
Per Anger once said that what characterised his friend was that he was „a true humanist“. The world desperately needs more Raoul Wallenbergs and brave souls like Dr Martin Luther King, who is officially remembered today in the United States for his relentless yet peaceful fight against racism, bigotry and hatred. The new government cannot begin its work under a better star than to be guided by the spirit of these two men.
