The Fritz Bauer Library, with its stories of resistance and survival, has recently added the story of Wilfredo Saavedra , written by Dr Anna Barrera Vivero. In close co-operation with the courageous lawyer and fighter for human rights, Anna Barrera Vivero has written down his courageous life.
The GLS Future Foundation for Development supports the lawyer and his commitment. The editorial team of the Fritz Bauer Blog shares the GLS Future Foundation Development’s congratulations on his 65th birthday with great respect for WILFREDO SAAVEDRA and his tireless, self-sacrificing work.
According to his records, lawyer Wilfredo Saavedra has provided free legal advice and defence to over 2,300 farmers and environmental activists in the Cajamarca region who have been abused, attacked or accused by mining companies and/or state institutions since 2000.
We are honoured and grateful that his story and his commitment are documented in the Fritz Bauer Library and will continue to pass it on.
„The coronavirus has not spared Wilfredo Saavedra. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 at the beginning of June and had to undergo four months of lengthy treatment. Due to the bronchial infection he had developed after many years of harsh imprisonment, his family was seriously concerned about his chances of recovery. Together with a circle of about twelve people, consisting of doctors, nurses and members of neighbourhood committees, they built a support network around him and provided him with the necessary medication and financial means to undergo the treatment. Fortunately, he was able to recover. At the end of October, he resumed his work and once again devoted his time and energy to a new case of human rights violations in the province of Condebamba.
On 13 November, Wilfredo Saavedra celebrates his 65th birthday. Together with his family, his colleagues and the many people that Mr Saavedra has defended over the course of his thirty-seven-year career, the GLS Future Foundation for Development wishes him good health and good luck in his valuable work for the protection of human and environmental rights!“
