And if so, under what conditions? What are the prospects for international efforts to de-escalate the violence and what realistic prospects are there? In her lecture, Dr Muriel Asseburg will outline the developments since 7 October and assess the current situation. The focus will not only be on the traumas that have erupted on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, nor solely on the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, but also on the political dimension of the struggle for power.
Dr Muriel Asseburg is a political scientist and Senior Fellow in the Africa and Middle East Research Group at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. Israel and Palestine have been a focus of her research for many years. She is currently working primarily on conflict dynamics and peace efforts in the Middle East and autocratisation as a challenge for German and European politics. She holds a doctorate in political science, economics and international law from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and has lived and worked in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Damascus and Beirut, among other places.
On 24 August 2024, C.H.Beck published the 11th edition of M. Asseburg’s book „Der Nahostkonflikt. History, Positions, Perspectives“ (together with Jan Busse).
