The book Fritz Bauer. Biography 1903-1968 by historian Irmtrud Wojak presents one of the most important fighters for the rule of law and human rights in 20th century Europe. It shows the ethical and legal legacy of resistance and solidarity of the outstanding personality of the civil rights activist Fritz Bauer.

„That Fritz Bauer was able to do what he did despite all adversity seems incredible to us. Above expediencies, adaptations, capitulations, he raised the harsh and at the same time level-headed voice of justice as one of the prophets of the religion in which he did not believe. Few people in the 20th century have achieved or brought about as many necessary and just changes as Fritz Bauer, even if his fame has remained largely confined to Germany.

I can’t help but think of another activist and incorruptible visionary, Martin Luther King. (…) The deepest similarity between them seems to me to be their willingness to make sacrifices. I call it the full acceptance that the price of the cause to which one is dedicated is nothing less than one’s own life. (…) Both lived daily with open hostility, with anonymous letters, with death threats.

They died almost thirty years apart in age, only a few months apart. We know that their sacrifice, one religious, the other civic, was not in vain. Fritz Bauer and Martin Luther King are among the few people who can objectively be said to have made the world a better place. But even the best documentarist or the most astute biographer will not be able to fathom the real secret, that of Fritz Bauer’s personal loneliness.“

„Que Fritz Bauer pudiera hacer contra viento y marea todo lo que hizo nos parece increíble. Por encima de las conveniencias, los acomodos, las capitulaciones, alzó la voz áspera y serena de la justicia como uno de los profetas de esa religión en la que no creía. De pocas personas en el siglo XX puede decirse que lograran o propiciaran tantos cambios necesarios y justos como de Fritz Bauer, aunque su figura haya quedado muy limitada al ámbito alemán.

A mí siempre me hace pensar en otro activista y visionario insobornable, Martin Luther King. (…) La semejanza que me parece más profunda entre ellos es la de una actitud sacrificial. Llamo así a la plena aceptación de que el precio exigido por la causa a la que uno se dedicica es ni má ni menos que su propia vida. (…) Los dos vivieron a diario la hostilidad abierta, los anónimos, las amenazas de muerte.

Murieron con casi treinta años de diferencia, apenas con unos meses de distancia. Nosotros sabemos que su sacrificio, el uno religioso, el otro cívico, no fue en vano. Fritz Bauer y Martin Luther King son de esas pocas personas de las que puede decirse con toda objetividad que mejoraron el mundo. Pero el misterio íntimo, el secreto de la soledad personal de Fritz Bauer, ni el biógrafo mejor documentado o más sagaz podrá tal vez averiguarlo.“
