Information on

Open Monument Day®

The Open Monument Day® is the largest cultural event in Germany. Since 1993, it has been coordinated nationwide by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which is under the patronage of the Federal President. The listed former Havkenscheid mourning hall, which has since become the Fritz Bauer Library, will be open to visitors on 10 September 2023 from 10:00 to 18:00. We also offer an interesting accompanying programme with short guided tours, a lecture and opportunities for discussion. We look forward to seeing you!

Programme

10:00 – 10:30 a.m., guided tour:

How does a former mourning hall become a library? What does the Fritz Bauer Forum actually do? The guided tours shed light on the history of the site and its new use by the Fritz Bauer Forum.

11:00 – 12:00, lecture:

The mourning hall was built in 1972 to a design by architect Ferdinand Keilmann as part of the extension of the main cemetery. He joined the NSDAP in 1932, underwent the denazification process twice after 1945 and played a major role in the reconstruction of the city of Bochum. The social scientist Arne Keilmann researches the architectural history of the Nazi era and early West Germany. He is also a grandson of Keilmann. In his lecture, he will offer both specialised knowledge and personal insights.

14:00 – 14:30, guided tour:
