Foreign injustice - distant suffering
This year’s joint event of the Bochum Justice Centre and the Fritz Bauer Forum in Bochum will focus on challenges for international jurisdiction – a very topical issue that must be constantly reassessed in light of political developments in the world. This evaluation will be carried out by two speakers who will address the topic not only from a political perspective, but also from the perspective of international law.
Both speakers will also present their latest books at the lecture.
Dr Muriel Asseburg is a political scientist and Senior Fellow in the Africa and Middle East Research Group at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. Israel and Palestine have been a focus of her research for many years. She is currently working primarily on conflict dynamics and peace efforts in the Middle East and autocratisation as a challenge for German and European politics. She holds a doctorate in political science, economics and international law from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and has lived and worked in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Damascus and Beirut, among other places. Her book „7 October and the war in Gaza. Background, Escalation, Consequences“ will be published by C.H. Beck on 20 March 2025.
Dr Gerd Hankel, international law expert and linguist, studied at the universities of Mainz, Granada and Bremen. He has been a freelancer at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research since 1993 and a research associate at the Hamburg Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture since 1998. He has worked in and on East Africa for more than two decades and is the author of several books. Hankel is a member of the Working Group on International Criminal Law and an expert witness in trials relating to asylum law and international criminal law. His book „Fernes Unrecht. Foreign suffering. On the enforceability of international law“ was published by Hamburger Edition in September 2024.
The event will take place at the Bochum Justice Centre.
