Information on
The Fritz Bauer Forum is being established at the main cemetery at Havkenscheid (Feldmark 107) as an international place for research, education, art and dialogue in Bochum. Based on the life’s work of the lawyer and Holocaust survivor Dr Fritz Bauer (1903-1968), the forum promotes the discussion of democracy and human rights. The centrepiece is the former Havkenscheid mourning hall, which is being converted into the Fritz Bauer Library, and the adjoining former municipal depot, which will become an international venue for seminars, workshops, art and media.
The former mourning hall was designed by the Bochum city architect Ferdinand Keilmann (1907- 1979), who was a member of the NSDAP and joined the SPD after the war. After 1945, Keilmann underwent the denazification process twice, after which he was appointed to the Bochum Building Department.
The guided tours shed light on the history of the site and its new use by the Fritz Bauer Forum.
