What did a first-time German visitor see, what does a Chilean see?

The enormous fascination of the first impression of his encounter with the country of Chile prompted Roman Hillmann to take the initiative to enter into dialogue with the differentiated knowledge of two native Chileans.

Lecture and subsequent discussion with Roman Hillmann (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum), Pedro Crovetto (social, economic and political scientist, Bochum) and
Víctor Cobs-Muñoz (environmental scientist; Spatial Modelling Lab (RAM), Department of Spatial Planning, TU Dortmund)

In July, Roman Hillmann flew to Chile for the first time for a conference and learnt to love it:

„Where was I, where the sun moves anti-clockwise? Where you can get a taxi instead of an ‚Uber‘ in a pinch? Where such different plants grow? I lived in Valparaíso and travelled to Viña del Mar in the morning on the lively public buses. Then on foot, I experienced nature on the way to a conference on the history of technology from a global perspective. Back in the evening, the taxi drivers told me about the 2019/20 protests, but what did I think I understood about Chile as a newcomer?
At the event, my fascinated first impression entered into dialogue with the differentiated knowledge of two native Chileans.“

PD Dr Roman Hillmann, born in Hamburg, lived in Berlin for 35 years before moving to Bochum with his family. He specialises in architectural history, industrial culture and conservation methods for industrial monuments. The history of technology is important to him in order to understand what technology means for people and why it is causing species extinction and climate change.

In discussion with Roman Hillmann:

Pedro Crovetto (social, economic and political scientist, Bochum)
Víctor Cobs-Muñoz (environmental scientist; Spatial Modelling Lab (RAM), Department of Spatial Planning, TU Dortmund)

Welcome address:

PD Dr Irmtrud Wojak (Managing Director Fritz Bauer Forum, Bochum)
