The joint commemoration, organised by Combatants for Peace and the Parents Circle-Families Forum, is one of the largest Israeli-Palestinian peace events in history. It provides a significant opportunity for Israelis and Palestinians to mourn together and call for peace and an end to violence. This ceremony takes place annually on the eve of Yom HaZikaron and honours the suffering and loss on both sides. It emphasises the shared commitment to reconciliation, justice and hope – and is a sign of breaking the cycle of violence. The commemoration offers Palestinians and Israelis a unique opportunity to mourn side by side. The aim is not to equate the respective perspectives, but to build bridges of compassion and solidarity that can change the shared reality.

Combatants for Peace (CfP) is a grassroots movement of Israelis and Palestinians working together to end the occupation and create peace, equality, justice and freedom for all people living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. The organisation was founded by former fighters on both sides of an active conflict and has already been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Parents Circle-Families Forum is a bi-national organisation made up of over 850 Israeli and Palestinian bereaved families, all of whom have lost a loved one to the conflict and have chosen the path of reconciliation over revenge. The organisation carries out educational and awareness-raising activities among Israelis and Palestinians, using the power of personal testimonies to promote reconciliation.
Shlomit Stein (LLM, Yale) is a research associate at the Institute for International Peace and Conflict Law (IFHV) at Ruhr University Bochum. She is also currently completing a Master’s programme in Mediation and Conflict Management at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder).
