Mexico has changed a lot in recent decades. Not only has the more than 70-year rule of the PRI been broken up with the new millennium, but socially Mexico has also changed from a transit country for drugs to a producer and consumer with all its violent power struggles. At the same time, the country is facing ever greater challenges in terms of migration policy and is increasingly struggling with daily feminicides.
The workshop aims to bridge the gap between today’s Mexico, as it is not always portrayed in the German media, and a Mexico from the time when Gabriela Brimmer, writer and activist in the disability movement, fought for her rights. Her impressive story of resistance can be read in the book To live, to fight and to be ourselves, which she co-authored with the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska. The German translation of the book has been published by BUXUS EDITION and can be purchased here.
Reading or purchasing the book is not a prerequisite for participation in the workshop.
The literary scholar Mathias Sasse lived in Mexico for 13 years and had the opportunity to get to know Mexico and other countries in Latin America on many trips. In addition to his doctoral studies, he now works as a freelance translator and has already self-published two novels under a pseudonym.
Carmen Aristegui will not remain silent. The government-critical investigative journalist and newsreader is one of Mexico’s few voices with the courage to tell the truth. In 2015, Carmen and her team were sacked by MVS and sued. She revealed the involvement of the Peña Nieto presidential family in a property scandal. The population reacted with protests and more than 200,000 people signed a petition. In addition to murders, intimidation and dismissals, those in power in Mexico also use the justice system to prevent critical journalism. For the journalist, the fight for press freedom begins. On her new independent internet channel „Aristegui Noticias“, millions of people around the world listen to her as she exposes abuses. Silence Radio accompanies the indomitable woman as she continues to publish and manoeuvre a team of investigative journalists through the poisoned Mexican media landscape.
