Panel discussion
The panel discussion „The protection of Yazidis from deportation to Iraq“ sheds light on the current situation of Yazidis seeking protection in Germany. Experts from law, politics and human rights organisations, as well as people with a Yazidi background themselves, will discuss the legal, political and humanitarian challenges faced by refugees and show perspectives on how deportations can be prevented and protection guaranteed. The event offers space for questions and dialogue.
On the panel: Jasmin Doğu, Max Lucks, Manuel Kabis and Leyla Ferman (enquired)
Jasmin Doğu is currently studying law at the Ruhr University Bochum. Since April 2024, she has been supporting Professor Markus Kaltenborn’s Chair of Public Law as a student assistant, in particular on topics relating to the protection of minorities and human rights. In addition, she has been working as a student assistant at the VdK social association in Bochum-Wattenscheid since March 2025.
Max Lucks has been a member of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen since 2013 and a member of the German Bundestag since 2021. He is the spokesperson for his parliamentary group on the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid and a full member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. He has also campaigned for the rights of Yazidis for many years.
Manuel Kabis has practised as a lawyer in Dortmund since 1992. He specialises in migration law and criminal law and is a lecturer at Ruhr University Bochum (asylum and immigration law). Mr Kabis is co-author of two specialist books on migration law published by Nomos-Verlag.
Dr Leyla Ferman (online via Zoom) is co-founder of Women for Justice e.V., which is particularly committed to helping Yazidi women from Shingal/Iraq who have been abducted by the so-called Islamic State. She is also the coordinator of FERMAN, a documentation and education project of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation in Germany.
