Reading and discussion
Is this still my country? Sarah Levy has been asking herself this question ever since she witnessed how Israel’s right-wing nationalist government is dividing Israeli society. Then Hamas attacks the country on 7 October 2023 and the war brutally changes the young mother’s life in Tel Aviv. She flees to her home in Frankfurt with her partner and child and is forced to realise that Germany is no longer her country. But the Israel she returns to is fighting for its soul. Friends are suddenly carrying weapons, relatives want Palestinians to be wiped out, neighbours accuse her of betraying the soldiers. The everyday life of war between the shelter and omnipresent loss takes Levy to her limits – as a mother and as a partner, but also as a German who must now understand that the country she has chosen to live in has long since lost hope of a peaceful future with the Palestinians. Who will my son be, she asks herself, when he grows up here?
Sarah Levy describes with critical compassion how radicalisation and polarisation change a country – and ultimately herself.
Sarah Levy, born in 1985, attended the Henri Nannen School of Journalism and writes as a freelance journalist for DIE ZEIT, among others. Since 2018, she has coordinated the stopantisemitismus.de project, which provides information and support on anti-Semitism in everyday life, and works for various foundations.
