Start Wearing Purple (2022) 74min, English/German
Director: Müge Süer, Hendrik Kintscher
The film by the two filmmakers Müge Süer and Hendrik Kintscher tells the story of Berliners who have had enough of Berlin’s rent madness and no longer want to wait for politics. They join forces to get their homes back from big investors. The documentary film Start Wearing Purple follows an inspiring and refreshing movement that could turn the understanding of home ownership and property everywhere upside down.
Five Berliners with diverse backgrounds and life stories find themselves among nearly two thousand committed people fighting together for the same cause. Although their personal motivations differ, they believe they can expropriate the city’s largest property companies and make housing affordable again.
The stakes are high, their movement has grown, but they still have almost nothing but a few signatures in their hands. They have to assert themselves against the overwhelming power of the property lobby and the politicians who are prepared to sell off their own city.
The documentary film Start Wearing Purple shows what drives these otherwise very ordinary people to persevere despite all the setbacks and to believe in a goal that could permanently change conditions in their city, their country and ultimately everywhere.
The event is part of the 2nd Mini Festival for Visionary Urban Development organised by Bo-Initiativ. More information here.
Director’s Statement
„Poverty, climate change, disasters, overpowering corporations, despair…
We are tired and frustrated by the dystopias that are presented to us every day, not only in films and series, but also in the news and on social media, without perspective, without a way out, as pure sensation. It seems as if we are only being prepared for doom.
So we have decided to tell a different story.
A story that can awaken hope and encouragement in all of us. We want to show that there really are ideas and opportunities everywhere that are worth standing up for, doing something about and changing things for the better for you and the people around you.
In the spirit of the almost forgotten Tercer Cine, we want to use the medium of film again to make real, fundamental change tangible, perceptible and tangible and ultimately to initiate it elsewhere.“
