Lecture and discussion with Dr Tobias Cremer (SPD, Member of the European Parliament) and Prof Dr David Elcott(Wagner School of Public Service at NYU) live from the USA
Location: Fritz Bauer Library, Feldmark 107, 44803 Bochum
In his lecture, Dr Tobias Cremer will focus on the following questions: How do right-wing populist movements work and network in Europe and the United States? How do right-wing populist movements influence the election campaign in the USA? How does Europe view the election in the USA? He will also discuss the influence of the election results on European politics and democracy in Europe and how various European countries are reacting to the election strategies and results in the USA.
We will then switch live online to the USA, where a yet-to-be-named person from the US Congress will report on the US election campaign and on transatlantic cooperation on issues of democracy and human rights before and after the elections, social media and the issue of disinformation in the election process. This will be followed by a discussion on what has been heard.
Dr Tobias Cremer is an SPD politician and has been a member of the European Parliament since 2024. He studied in Paris and Harvard and completed his PhD in Political Science and International Relations at Cambridge University in the UK. From 2020-2022 he was a lecturer in political science at Oxford University. Since 2022 he has worked as a diplomat in the European Department of the Federal Foreign Office.
Prof Dr David Elcott is the son of Ruth Meyer from Krefeld, who fled the city in 1939 to escape the anti-Jewish measures and emigrated to the USA. He is Professor of Practice in Public Service and Leadership at the Wagner School of Public Service at NYU. In the book „Faith, Nationalism and the Future of Liberal Democracy“, he and other authors address the controversy over who belongs and what the authentic values of a nation and society are, including the role religion plays in the public sphere.
