11 September 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the brutal military coup against Chile’s democratically elected president Salvador Allende. In his book, Günther Wessel tells the biography of Allende and the history of Chile. Since December 2021, a left-wing alliance has once again been in power and the Minister of Defence is Maya Fernández Allende, a granddaughter of Salvador Allende. Is Chile on the brink of a new dawn? In a conversation with the author Günther Wessel, fundamental questions about Chile’s history and the country’s development up to the present day will be explored.
Günther Wessel, born in 1959, studied German and philosophy and has been a freelance author and journalist since 1992. His work has taken him to many different countries in Latin America, the USA and Belgium. He now lives in Berlin. (Photo: hasskarl.de)
In this documentary film, filmmaker Marcia Tambutti Allende, granddaughter of Chilean President Salvador Allende, researches the history of her grandfather in the time before the military coup in 1973. Her search for private moments is not only met with approval by the family, as the personal image of her grandfather was buried by the pain of her family and exile. Marcia cautiously tries to break the decades-long silence.
ATTENTION: The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.
A joint event in the series of the Bochum Alliance „Solidarity and Remembrance“.
