Lecture and discussion

—– ATTENTION: The event with Dr. Claudia Fröhlich had to be postponed at short notice. A new date will follow! ——

In 1984, the lawyer Helmut Kramer reconstructed the proceedings against „Presidents of Higher Regional Courts and Attorneys General as accomplices of Nazi „euthanasia““ in „Kritische Justiz“, which the Hessian Attorney General Fritz Bauer had been planning against the highest-ranking Nazi lawyers since the late 1950s. The proceedings against the high representatives of the Nazi judiciary did not materialise.

Claudia Fröhlich shows why not only Bauer’s investigations but also Helmut Kramer’s text are a milestone in a critical history of justice.

Dr Claudia Fröhlich is the director of the Martin Niemöller House, a place of learning and remembrance in Berlin-Dahlem. She is a political scientist and curator, her research areas are the history of resistance, cultures of remembrance and dealing with National Socialism after 1945. She received her doctorate with a thesis on Fritz Bauer’s concept of resistance. In 2022, she wrote a concept for the further development of the culture of remembrance in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck under the title „Lübeck remembers – to live democracy“.
