Colombia is considered to be one of the oldest democracies. In the course of the first wave of colonial liberation movements that took place at the turn of the 19th century, a republican state was established there. Compared to the Restoration period in Europe, but also to the other young republics of the New World, this state appears to be particularly progressive. This also applies to the declaration of comprehensive human and civil rights. However, the gap between the constitution and constitutional reality could hardly be greater. This contradiction persists to this day. The state’s commitment to human rights, which also includes comprehensive social rights in the 1991 constitution, contrasts with blatant crimes against humanity. Using the Colombian example, the workshop would like to invite fundamental reflection on the claim and reality of human rights in the context of modern statehood.

Joachim Jachnow is a historian and journalist. In addition to Colombia, he has also conducted research in many other Latin American countries and most recently taught at the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla in Mexico. His academic work focuses in particular on the modern history of political ideas in its close interaction with economic and social history.

Film screening „El Olvido que Seremos / Memories of My Father“

The film Memories of My Father is based on the novel by Héctor Abad Faciolince about his father (see event on 24 October 2023). Spanish Oscar-winner Fernando Trueba adapted the novel into a film, which was awarded the 2021 Goya Prize for Best Ibero-American Film.

ATTENTION: The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.
